Fergus Falls is well off the beaten path, and home to a small population. If it’s any indication of how the town functions, the brewery’s owner is also the town mayor. He was making the rounds in the taproom, chatting with locals about his knitted sweater, covered in maple leaves and beavers.
My beer, the Jeff Davis Porter, is named for the horse Ulysses S. Grant stole from Jefferson Davis and named after him (because being absolutely savage is not exclusive to twitter feuds). Every beer at Union Pizza and Brewing is named for a Civil War horse, which fits well with the Americana decor.
I solicited advice from Matt, the head brewer. “I have a lot of life advice; I’ve done a lot of things the wrong way.
“My advice is to explore your options. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do. I was a survey tech for an ag company and eventually lost that job at the same time I had a new baby and a new house. Now I’m an ER nurse and a brewer.
“Don’t get caught up in your first job because you don’t know what you should be doing. I don’t know if you’re a religious person, but you will find your calling or destiny or place to be.”
